Q&A with Site Manager, Dan Edwards

Q: Hi Dan, can you tell us about yourself and your family?

A: Hi, I’m Dan and I’m a Site Manager at Earthstone Construction where I’ve worked for the past 3 years.

On the personal front, I am married to Miri and we have three children: Kayla, who is 4 years old, and twins Josie and Ferne, who are 2 years old. I would describe my family life as both manic and organised in the best way.

Q: When did you join Earthstone?

A: I joined Earthstone in August 2020. Upon joining, I started working as a Groundworker at The Tannery in Holt. The Site Manager at the time, Ryan, recognised my potential and recommended me for the position of Assistant Site Manager. By August 2021, I had progressed to become a Site Manager.

Q: What were you doing before joining Earthstone?

A: Prior to joining Earthstone, I worked at Andrews Groundworks where I joined at 17 years old straight from school, operating under the guidance of Shane (Construction Director at Earthstone) and his father. Our work mainly took us around the South West region. During my time there, I gained valuable on-the-job experience and obtained my NVQ City & Guilds qualification. In 2008, Andrews Groundworks underwent a change in ownership, so I took the opportunity to travel to Australia. During my time there, I worked on pipeworks, farms, and various professional groundworks projects for about a year. Additionally, during the COVID pandemic, I worked as a labourer for approximately three months, bridging the gap between jobs.

Q: Has Stonewood/Earthstone helped you grow? In what ways?

A: Absolutely! Stonewood & Earthstone have played a significant role in my personal and professional growth. They have been incredibly supportive and have constantly encouraged me to excel in my role. One of the most impactful changes has been the emphasis on Health & Safety, which is of utmost importance to Stonewood & Earthstone. This focus has helped me develop a keen awareness and implementation of safety practices in my work.

Q: You saw The Tannery project from its inception through to completion. What was your favourite part of the job?

A: The Tannery project was a valuable experience for me, filled with numerous learning curves. It involved navigating through various dos and don’ts, and the lessons I learned along the way have proven to be immensely helpful. Building strong relationships with clients and customers has been a highlight, and effective communication and collaboration with the Stonewood team were essential in achieving successful project completion.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in the construction industry?

A: I would tell anyone interested in the construction industry that it can be both challenging and rewarding. Witnessing the completion of a project is incredibly satisfying, as it gives you a tangible sense of accomplishment. However, it is important to note that there are often tight deadlines to meet, particularly due to Completion and Mortgage Lender (CML) requirements. This can sometimes be stressful, but it is also encouraging when you successfully meet those targets.

Q: What do you enjoy about working for Earthstone?

A: One of the things I enjoy most about working for Earthstone is the sense of team effort. I find it comfortable to communicate and interact with people, and I am always ready to engage in resolving any issues that arise. Being part of the Stonewood Group, I have found the company to be very friendly and approachable, almost like a family. This positive work environment greatly enhances my overall job satisfaction.

Q: What project are you currently working on?

A: Currently, I am working on a commercial project for a private client, managing a team of five individuals who are based near the Earthstone office. We are dedicated to delivering excellent work on this project and are fully focused on finishing on time and price.
